Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • Extension limits are not to be exceeded: up to 40,000 characters for articles (including spaces, notes and bibliography), 8,000 for notes.
  • The text adheres to the formal requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic rules (APA style).
  • The version of the article to be uploaded is ready for a blind peer review.
  • Abstract (maximum 150 words), keywords (maximum 8) and a list of bibliographical references are ready to be uploaded when prompted.

Author Guidelines

Originality of manuscripts
All manuscripts submitted for publication must be original and should not be published elsewhere. The authors guarantee that the manuscripts they submit are not under consideration for any other publication at the same time.

Languages
The journal publishes articles in any Romance language and in English. If you submit an article in Catalan, please make sure you follow the orthographic guidelines contained in the Llibre d'estil of the University of Barcelone or in the Guia d'usos lingüístics of the University of Valencia.

Length of manuscripts
Articles for the monographic section(s) and for the free section: maximum 40,000 characters (footnotes included).
Notes: 6,000-10,000 characters (footnotes included).
Reviews: maximum 6,000 characters.

Submission
Manuscripts must be submitted using the webpage of the journal. They may not be submitted via email.
When authors submit the manuscript on the webpage of the journal, they are required to submit, in the appropriate sections of the form, an abstract (maximum 100 words), some keywords (maximum 8) and the references.

Style
Font: Times New Roman 12.
Do not underline or bold the text to emphasise it.
Hyphens and dashes must not be confused:
• Nel dizionario italiano-spagnolo — pubblicato l’anno scorso — non compare la parola evenemenziale.

Footnotes are flagged by a superscripted number immediately following that portion of the text the note refers to. The superscripted number is placed after punctuation marks and parentheses, but before dashes:
• Ne parleremo in seguito.1
• Non serve aggiungere (e sia detto tra parentesi)2 nient’altro.
• Non è necessario — tranne in pochissimi casi3 — specificare ulteriormente la questione.

In the body of the text, the titles of artistic works and compositions, the titles of books and book chapters, the names of newspapers and periodicals, the titles of corpora and databases must be written in italics.

How to cite sources
Quaderns d’Italià follows the APA style guidelines which are exemplified below. Where the journal standards are not explicit, authors should refer to the APA Standards (7th edition).

Citing direct sources
Sources have to be cited as in the following examples:
• Come segnala Vitale (1986), la decisione del titolo della prima edizione del vocabolario della Crusca fu il risultato di successive delibere.
• La prima edizione del vocabolario della Crusca (il cui titolo fu, come segnala Vitale, 1986, il risultato di successive delibere) fu data alle stampe nel 1612.
• La decisione del titolo della prima edizione del vocabolario della Crusca fu il risultato di successive delibere (Vitale, 1986, pp. 126-127).
• Miquel Rosell (1958, vol. 2, p. 418) attribuisce l’opera a un ellenista missionario in Terra Santa.

Quotations
Quotations in the body of the text must be enclosed in double inverted comas. If the quotation comprises 40 or more words, it must be displayed in a freestanding block of text; the block must be separated from the body of the text with a white blank line before and after, it must be indented 1 cm from the left margin of the text, and it must not be enclosed in quotation marks.

The author/editor, the date of publication and the page number(s) must appear immediately after the quotation, like in the following examples:
• Sarà utile ricordare che il problema della lingua nel Settecento “non si presenta più come un problema letterario, ma come una questione sociale e nazionale” (Folena, 1983, p. 55).

If some part of a quotation has been left out, the missing text is indicated with an ellipsis between brackets. If some word is added to the quotation, it must be written between brackets.
• [m]a non si deve neanche confondere l’umorismo vero e proprio con l’humour inglese [...] L’umorismo vero e proprio è un’altra cosa, ed è anche per gl’Inglesi un’eccentricità di stile. Basta confondere l’una cosa e l’altra — diciamo anche noi a nostra volta — perché si venga a riconoscere una letteratura umoristica a un popolo e a negarla a un altro. (Pirandello, 2006, p. 899).

Double inverted comas must be avoided within a quotation and must be substituted with single inverted comas.
• Lonardi (2017, p. 94) osserva che in Virgilio la similitudine ha per attori dei contadini, “della stessa schiatta, dunque, del leopardiano villanello, che tra gli ‘averi / […] poverelli’ della sua famigliola conta sulle vigne che crescono a stento su una zolla morta e su un ‘picciol campo’”.

Classical poems have to be quoted according to the following formats:
• (Inf. XIII, 40-45)
• (RVF 35, 1-2)
• (Fur. XXIII, 128, 1-3)

When the author decides to indicate only the numbers of the verses, or when the numbers of the verses are preceded only by the title of the composition, the numbers must be preceded by the abbreviation v./vv.
• In Poscia ch’amor sembra esserci un riferimento esplicito alla lussuria dei falsi leggiadri (“Qual non dirà fallenza / divorar cibo ed a lussuria intendere”, vv. 32-33).
• Qui si coglie un riferimento esplicito alla lussuria dei falsi leggiadri: “Qual non dirà fallenza / divorar cibo ed a lussuria intendere” (Poscia ch’amor, vv. 32-33).

Citing works by two or more authors
Two authors:
• (Renzi & Andreose, 2003)

From three to five authors. First citation:

Citing web sites and web documents
Web sites and documents available in internet must be cited following the same rules that have been explained above. If the website has an administrator, he/she/it can be considered the editor of the item and appear as such in the quotation and in the reference list.
• In the Corpus OVI dell’italiano antico (Larson & Artale, 2019)...
• In the online version of the well-known Treccani encyclopedia (Enciclopedia Treccani, n.d.), s.v. Leonardo di Ser Giovanni...

Citing indirect sources (secondary sources)
In the in-text citation, one should include the surnames of both authors, but the reference is only to the secondary source:
• As Zanzotto (as cited in Brevini, 1990, p. 97) points out…

Reference list
Quaderns d’Italià follows the rules of APA style that are explained in the following pages. When the rules of the journal are not explicit, please refer to the APA handbook.
The surname(s) of the author/editor must be written in its full form, must be followed by a coma and by the initial(s) of the name(s).
If there are more authors/editors, the last one is preceded by coma and ampersand. If there are more than six authors, one must indicate the first five and the last, while the rest of the authors are substituted with an ellipsis.
If the author/editor of the text is not explicitly mentioned and cannot be reconstructed, one must omit this piece of information and begin the entry with the title of the work.
If there is a subtitle, it must be separated from the title with colon. The first letter of the subtitle is uppercase.
As a general rule, in the titles of periodicals all non-functional words should be written with a capital letter (for example, La Parola del Testo, Bollettino dell’Atlante Lessicale degli Antichi Volgari Italiani).
The place of publication has to be indicated as it is customary in the language used in the article (e.g., if the article is written in Italian the place of publication appears in the original language, if the article is in Spanish or Catalan the place name is translated).
La name of the publisher must be indicated in its full form (but words like “Publishing House” have to be omitted). If there are two publishers, their names must be separated with a slash. If there are two places of publication, the place names must be separated with a slash, too.
If a text is in print, this must be indicated as it is customary in the language used in the article (e.g., if the article is written in Italian with “in corso di stampa”, if it is in English with “in print”).
Any complementary piece of information (e.g. authorship of prologue, epilogue, critical notes…) may be added, between parentheses, after the title.
If the author cites a translated version of a work, the reference must be only to the translated version, not to the original one. If for any reason the author wants to mention also the original version, in the reference list the information about the original version must be placed between parentheses at the end of the entry; after the in-text citation both years of publication must be indicated:
• (Spitzer, 1921/1976)

The same applies if the author wants to mention two different editions of a work:
• (Vineis, 1976/2009)

If the author wants to mention the series a book belongs to, the name of the series must appear in roman script, preceded and followed by a full stop, before the place of publication.

Use of the UAB's website and any of the services it offers implies full acceptance of the terms stipulated by the following data protection policy.

1. Data Collection and Consent

In compliance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we herein inform users that the personal data requested in our forms or that might be provided via our email addresses, based on unambiguous explicit consent, is included in our personal data files for which the UAB is the owner and responsible. Thus, when filling in any of the forms with the personal data requested and accepting its being sent or sending us an email with personal data, the user expressly authorizes and consents to the UAB processing and incorporating this personal data provided and all the data generated from the user's participation or use of the different products or services offered on this website, though this may be revoked but not with retroactive effects, and accepts the data processing terms set out below.

Likewise, we inform users that all data shall be processed confidentially and in accordance with the data protection legislation in force, and that our files are legally registered in the Catalan Data Protection Agency's General Register.

The UAB accepts no responsibility for personal data processing on web pages that users access via the different links to be found on our website.

This website is regulated by the legislation exclusively applicable to Spain, to which users of this website, whether in Spain or abroad, shall be subject.

2. Uses

The data requested are adequate, pertinent and strictly necessary for the ends for which they are collected, as sending news through email given or recognize in future visits. They shall never be used for an end other than that for which they have been ceded and, under no circumstances, shall the user be obliged to provide us with them. Nonetheless, they are absolutely necessary for the development of the services offered.

Unless specifically stipulated otherwise, all the fields on all the forms need to be filled in. Users must fill in the forms with true, accurate, complete and up-to-date information. The user is solely responsible for any damage or prejudice, whether direct or indirect, that may affect the UAB or any third party due to filling in forms with false, inaccurate, incomplete, outdated or third-party information.

Our website obtains users' personal data by receiving different forms or emails to manage subscriptions to our journal or, where applicable, due to participation as an author, editor or reviewer, based on unambiguous explicit consent.

The UAB reserves the right to decide to incorporate, or not, these people's data into its files.

3. Users' Right to Access, Rectify and Cancel Personal Data

Those involved in editing this journal seek to be compliant with industry standards for data privacy, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provision for “data subject rights” that include (a) breach notification; (b) right of access; (c) the right to be forgotten; (d) data portability; and (e) privacy by design. The GDPR also allows for the recognition of “the public interest in the availability of the data,” which has a particular saliency for those involved in maintaining, with the greatest integrity possible, the public record of scholarly publishing.

The user has the right to request cancellation of the subscription, access the information held in the UAB's files, declared at Data Protection Register of Catalonia, rectify erroneous information, cancel it or oppose its processing, in the terms established by the Law. To do so, they must email sp.revistes.digitals@uab.cat.

Authors' requests for cancellation of data shall not affect their articles published on the website, in line with authors' unlimited cession of copyright to the UAB.

If you do not expressly cancel your personal data from our files, we shall assume you are still interested in remaining on file while this remains appropriate for the ends for which they were obtained and while the UAB deems appropriate.

4. Security

The UAB, in response to the trust placed in us and taking into account the importance of protection and confidentiality of users' personal data, hereby informs you that we have adopted all the technical and organizational measures to safeguard security as required by the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in force on security of files containing personal data.

5. Cession of Data

We inform you that your data are processed confidentially and used for the ends indicated, and only communicated in the cases covered by the legislation and to bodies who, alongside the UAB, produce the journal, as shown on the website, and manage and collaborate in the journal's publication.

Personal metadata related with a published article (name and surname, profesional affiliation, ORCID number, country) are deposited and distributed, associated with an article, in order to assign a DOI through Crossreff.

The UAB provides users different recommendation options, which are the sole responsibility of the person sending the message. The UAB accepts no responsibility for the sending of unsolicited commercial mailings. Under no circumstances do we keep the recipient's email address. Likewise, batch sending of messages by users via these options is strictly prohibited, as is any commercial use.

6. Cookies

The UAB communicates to users, through this notice, that it uses cookies when the user accesses the different screens and pages that make up the site. The cookies used by the UAB are stored on the user's hard drive, but cannot read data contained thereon nor read the cookies created by other providers. The UAB uses cookies in order to recognize users who have registered and so as to offer them a better, more personalized service (the user's preferred language, etc.). They are also used to obtain completely anonymous information about access data (date, hour, minute, frequency, etc.), so as to be able to measure certain traffic parameters for the website itself and calculate the number of visits made, so that the UAB can focus and adjust the services offered most effectively. Despite this, the user may stop the generation of cookies by using the corresponding option offered by their browser. In this case, the website shall remain operative, but without the advantages offered for personalization.

7. Mailings

In compliance with article 21 of the Law on Information Society and E-commerce Services, which prohibits commercial mailings unless they have been expressly authorized by the recipients in advance, we hereby inform you that by accepting the terms of use and data protection policy, you expressly authorize informative, commercial, advertising and promotional mailings to the address provided. Nonetheless, if you do not wish to receive our commercial mailings, you can request cancellation following the instructions given in each mailing.

8. Modifications of this Data Protection Policy

This data protection policy was established on 5 May 2018. The UAB reserves the right to modify its data protection policy in future in accordance with its own criteria or due to a change in the legislation, jurisprudence or business practices. If the UAB introduces any changes, the new text shall be published on this same page, where the user is provided with information on the data protection policy. In any case, the relationship with users shall be governed by the regulations in force at the precise moment when they access the website and, as a result, they must be read every time users provide their data via our website.
