Punctuation and information structure
Abstract
Although academic works insist that the value of punctuation is primarily organizational and only marginally encodes phonetic aspects, in the field of informational structure we find a paradigmatic example of using punctuation to encode intonation. However, unlike interrogative, imperative, or exclamation marks, the coding of topic or focus does not have a specific sign, but uses a comma, which causes confusion. In this article I review the main informative functions of Catalan and the constructions that codify them as a previous step to understand the role of punctuation in its spelling. Based on this description, I make a proposal for the organization of content in the classroom that improves the efficiency not only of punctuation, but also of the global understanding of the phenomena involved.
