Abstract

The recent publication of the monograph on Luis Cubillo de Arteaga provides readers and researchers of the history of Spanish architecture with an overview of this 20th century architect. However, perhaps an approach to his residential educational buildings would have been desirable, understanding as such building models relating to residential educational establishments, mainly halls of residence, boarding schools and residential colleges. This is precisely the purpose of our paper, with the aim of rethinking the architect’s educational residential architecture, taking the Colegio del Patronato de Protección a la Mujer in Zamora as a model. Methodologically, we study the architectural designs of the project as well as the background and context of this work within the context of his architectural career. Our analysis reveals the remarkable contribution of this architect to the genre of residential educational establishments, which was previously practically unpublished. Perhaps the eventual frustration of this building project makes this approach more interesting, contributing to the dissemination of an architectural type that was less frequent in Cubillo de Arteaga’s work, but which achieved truly outstanding results.
