Developments on two works by the Master of Rimini in Catalonia
Abstract
The anonymous Master of the Altar of Rimini, or Master of Rimini, was active during the first half of the 15th century, with a workshop probably located in the south of the historical region of Franconia (in present-day Germany). He sculpted exclusively in alabaster, and his work was exported across Europe as far away as Clerques (France), Utrecht (Netherlands), Wroclaw (Poland), Rimini and Milan (Italy) and Fuerteventura (Spain). Among a considerable body of surviving works are two pieces in Catalonia, one in the Museu del Cau Ferrat in Sitges and another in the church of the Pietat in Igualada. This article carefully analyses them, to justify the attribution of the first, and the incorporation of the second, hitherto unpublished, in the artist’s workshop catalogue.
