The atelier of Mariano Fortuny in Granada (1870-1872)
Abstract
The Spanish painter Mariano Fortuny and his family lived in Granada between 1870 and 1872. According to several of the artist’s biographers, during his period in the city, Fortuny set up a studio referred to as the estudio de los Mártires, whose identity and location has never been determined with exactitude, and has remained as one of the most unknown aspects of the painter’s life for nearly one and a half centuries. However, a complete study of his painting Paisaje de Granada (c. 1871, MNAC), together with the analysis of some old letters, photographs and city maps of Granada, finally reveal, among other interesting news, the situation and details of this renowned atelier. Keywords
