Abstract

The objective of this article is to investigate the dynamics of language transmission in families from Pakistan and Morocco, especially between mothers and their daughters who have been educated, totally or partially, in Catalonia. Its focus is to analyze the daughters’ ideas about their families and languages, and therefore, how they categorize their mothers and how their mothers categorize themselves. The contents of the conversations carried out at the school as well as outside, between girls and between girls and their mothers, will be analyzed. The results will be related to previous studies about language socialization, categorization and construction of identity. This research concentrates on these children who “say they are the teachers of their parents or brothers and sisters” (Unamuno & Nussbaum, 2006), with the objective of determining how this language transmission is produced and profile the plurilingual competence of these children.
