Storia e traiettoria delle opere di Rossetti “dopo Dante”: tra collezioni private e musei
Abstract
Sebbene l'opera di Rossetti ispirata a Dante abbia lasciato un segno nel Preraffaellitismo, non ci soffermeremo qui sulle opere in sé, ma sulla loro carriera come pezzi in collezioni (private o pubbliche). Raramente hanno lasciato le collezioni britanniche o nordamericane, anche se oggi ci aspetteremmo di vederle nei principali musei del mondo. Le ragioni di questa situazione? La popolarità dei temi danteschi in Gran Bretagna all'epoca, certo, ma anche una nuova forma di collezionismo ristretta a pochi rivali, che approfittavano di musei ancora cauti nei confronti del preraffaellitismo e di critici che riconoscevano tardivamente Rossetti sul continente, in un momento in cui le sue opere erano già in transito in un circuito anglosassone da cui non sarebbero più uscite. In questo senso, l'attuale cartografia della collezione riflette tanto l'immaginario vittoriano quanto i cambiamenti del mercato dell'arte nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento.
