Grounds, pastes and pots. Some questions on research on the management of raw materials to make pottery
Abstract
Research on the strategies for the management of raw materials is undoubtedly one of the most widely developed courses of study in the context of the extension of technological studies on ceramic production carried out by human communities during the recent prehistory, as evidenced by the number of such studies carried out over the last 30 years. However, the assessment of the impact of these studies on broader discussions on the development and change processes of these communities leads us to consider the need to advance the formulation of theoretical and methodological proposals to define more robust research frameworks that will allow us to come up with substantive interpretative assumptions on certain aspects of the organization of production and consumption of these communities.This work raises some issues that, while not being exhaustive, we believe should be addressed in the evolution of studies on raw material management strategies to make pottery in the past. These issues should serve both to improve understanding of the role of these studies in a more general discussion framework and to raise with specialized researchers some issues that need to be addressed in order to achieve greater consistency in this way of study.
