The myth of the Dolchstoß and the question of responsibility in the unleashing of war (Kriegsschuldfrage) as axes of the public debate in the Weimar Republic

Abstract

In this text is analysed the impact of the Dolchstoß's myth (The stab in the back), which presented the German defeat in 1918 as the result of the treasn of the home front. This paper also analyses the Kriegsschuldfrage (the question of the responsibility in 1914 outbreak of war) as some examples of the manipulation of the public opinion during the Weimar Republic, the conditions of its efficacy and the answers of media and political institutions.

Alejandro Andreassi Cieri, Univeristat Autònoma de Barcelona

Alejandro Andreassi is a (retired) professor of late modern history at the Departament Modern and Contemporary History of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. His research focuses on the history of work and the labour movement, as well as in European fascisms. He is the author of «Arbeit macht Frei».
