Transnational Memories: a Portuguese General in the streets of Madrid

Authors

Abstract

Tetuán district in Madrid is home to many of the contested Francoist streets that Manuela Carmena’s municipal government managed to change the names of in 2018, in compliance with the so-called Law of Historical Memory. However, one street name in this area remains unchanged, Presidente Carmona Avenue, which honours the first president of the Portuguese dictatorship, Óscar Carmona. The existence of this street today is enigmatic for two reasons. On the one hand, almost all references to Carmona disappeared from Portuguese streets after the revolution of April 25, 1974. On the other, the permanence of a street in memory of the Portuguese dictatorship in Madrid is surprising given that references to Francoism are disappearing.
This article aims to shed light upon the different politics of memory that led to this apparent anomaly. Taking a theoretical perspective that creates a dialogue between memory studies and urban studies, the historical reconstruction of references to General Carmona in the urban space of Madrid will serve as a case study of the implications of what we may call transnational memories –the appropriation of transnational historical references in national narratives– for Iberian studies.
