Abstract

Through a Manichean process of the misrepresentation and ideological manipulation of the past, Franco’s approach to the history of the homeland synthesized and transformed the dictatorship’s nation-state project –New Spain– and national identity. To this end, the objective of teaching became instilling in citizens an awareness of belonging to a new nation and generating a feeling of adherence to, loyalty towards and confidence in the new regime. From the outset, the ideologues of the dictatorship used history textbooks as a tool to ensure the Francoist national identity charged with creating the New Man took root, and as an ideological weapon to completely destroy the Republican legacy and thus achieve the Caudillo’s desire to resurrect the Imperial Spain of Carlos I. Taking this obsession with restoring the colonial empire as a reference point, in this paper we carry out a historical and historiographical analysis of how Francoist school textbooks approached the causes of what they called the emancipation of Spanish America.

Author Biographies

Manuel Chust Calero, Universitat Jaume I

He is full professor of Contemporary History at the Jaume I University of Castellón. He is a specialist in doceañista liberalism and its significance in America as well as in the historical processes of the Latin American independence revolutions.

Among his latest books are: Tras la guerra, la tempestad. Reformismo borbónico, liberalismo doceañista y federalismo revolucionario en México (1812-1835) (2019) with José Antonio SERRANO, and El Trienio Liberal: Revolución e independencia en la monarquía hispánica (2020), with Pedro RÚJULA.

As an editor, there are among other: ¡Abajo la tiranía! América y España en revolución, 1776-1835 (2018); Los miedos sin patria. Temores revolucionarios en las independencias iberoamericanas (2019); 1821. México versus Perú (2020) i ¡Mueran las cadenas! El Trienio Liberal en América (2020).

He has been president of the Association of European Latin American Historians (AHILA) between 2005-2008. From 2008-2018 he was its managing editor. He is currently vice president of the Latin American History Association (ALAHIS) and co-director of the Virtual Conference on the History of America. He is director of the Master's Degree "History of the Hispanic World: Ibero-American Independences" at the Jaume I University of Castellón.

He is an international correspondent member of the Mexican Academy of History.

Víctor H. Silva Guijarro

He has a degree in History and a Master's in American History and Anthropology from the Complutense University of Madrid. He is a PhD candidate in the History of Education and Science in the doctoral program in Diversity, Subjectivity and Socialization. He studies in Social Anthropology, History of Psychology and Education at the National University of Distance Education (UNED). He is a researcher at the MANES-UNED Research Center. His line of research is the History of Education and Science in Ecuador and Spain (XIXth-XXth centuries). He has participated in national and international scientific conferences and has published book chapters and articles in specialized magazines about his research in school manuals where he has addressed, on the one hand, a study of the treatment of the Independence process given by the Ecuadorian school textbooks of the century XIX and XX and, on the other, the analysis of doceañista liberalism and the Independence of America in the Spanish school textbooks of the Franco regime.
