Preaching and argument structure
Abstract
A still unresolved question in the high school curriculum is how to link the contents of the sections devoted to the two basic units of grammatical analysis, the word and the sentence. Word classes and their properties, and the syntactic structure of the sentence with the functions that are performed in it are studied separately. This approach ignores one of the properties of natural language: the compositionality of meaning. Taking as a starting point the concept of ‘predicate’, which involves all lexical categories, is shown to be the way to connect both contents. This work presents some basic notions of the theory of predication and shows that they can be used to solve several problems of syntactic analysis. My aim is to demonstrate how advantageous it is to understand sentence syntax as a projection of certain properties of the lexicon.
