This paper reflects on the role of grammar in secondary education in the way the relationship between spoken and written language is presented. It addresses the profound differences between orality and writing, the distinction between language as a biological object (natural language) and as a cultural artefact (cultivated language). The reflection is accompanied by tasks to encourage reflection among both teachers and students. Grammar as a tool for contextualising the teaching of natural varieties and cultivated registers, thus promoting global communicative competence.
