Abstract

This paper assesses the role that grammar teaching plays in the Spanish language degree programmes offered by Spanish universities. In particular we focus on the academic training in grammar that future Spanish language teachers receive (i.e., how many hours are devoted to studying grammar and what sort of contents are dealt with). Assuming well-known observations that relate teacher training with the quality of education (Lázaro Carreter 1953), we look at the current state of the academic training provided by all Spanish public university systems, including other degrees like Mathematics.
