Contemporaneity, experience and movement: the difference in the relations between art and life in the context of contemporary black dances in the city of São Paulo

Abstract

The present essay aims to enable us to think about different ways of doing and transforming bodies and people in the context of contemporary dances, especially in the south zone of the city of São Paulo. Based on artists located there, we will try to demonstrate how our female interlocutors bring out other notions of "experience", "movement" and "contemporaneity". Resulting from the intersection between two fieldworks in the context of contemporary black dances in the examined region, we will point out "the difference that difference makes" when black female artists claim for themselves the quality of contemporaries, operating crucial differences facing the corporeal-creative canon of modernity and its obsession for the "new".
