Editor’s Note. Censorship of Children’s and Young Adult Literature in Spain and Portugal in the 20th and 21st Centuries: Ideological, Educational and Social Implications
Abstract
This special issue addresses censorship in Children’s and Young Adult Literature (CYL) in Spain and Portugal during the 20th and 21st centuries by analysing its ideological, educational and social implications. The volume is structured into four thematic sections. The first one examines censorship in Portugal during Salazar’s regime. The second one explores literary repression during Spanish Francoism. The third section explores censorship in contemporary democracies. Finally, section four provides an international perspective showing the case of Brazil and Ana María Machado’s memoirs (Hans Christian Andersen Award). This monograph is distinguished by its comprehensive research on the censorship of fairy tales and children’s cinema, as well as by its significant impact on contemporary publishing production and youth education. Therefore, this work constitutes a unique and relevant contribution to the field, offering unpublished data, archival evidence, galley proofs, memoirs, and original interviews that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in CYL and education.
