System of incompatibility: Art and society in the aesthetics of negativity

Abstract

Adorno’s philosophical reflections on aesthetical theory confront us with a duplicity which hinders an understanding of the relation of art with the problems of capitalist culture. On the one hand, artistic objects are defined by a singularity which differentiates them from the verbal practices and the validity base that nourishes social institutions. On the other hand, aesthetical phenomena are facts which cannot deny their inscription into a specific social framework. In this sense, Adorno presents the work of art as a “system of incompatibility” where unbridgeable determinations clash with each other. In this paper we address this paradox from the perspective of the aesthetics of negativity and develop its potentialities for contemporary social thought on art.
