The strange art of Dante Gabriel Rossetti translator of Dante
Abstract
The relation between Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Dante goes far beyond the dimension of translation. Rather, we can think of it in terms of stylistic appropriation, inspirational motifs, and the mirroring of a romantically re-lived, biographical paradigm. Dante's Vita Nuova re-lives in Dante Gabriel's House of Life, following the inevitable path of what appears to be an inescapable destiny already sealed by fate. The Dantean continuity between the translator and the poet is analyzed by looking at two sonnets (Gentil pensiero from Vita Nuova, and Life-in-love from The House of Life), following the thread that, from a translation, leads, unexpectedly, to an original composition.
