Joyce, Rossetti, Dante. The ‘Pre-Raphaelite’ edition of "New Life" in James Joyce's library and imagination
Abstract
Thanks to the inventory of Joyce’s personal library (Ellmann, 1977; Power 2018), it is known to us that his edition of the Vita Nuova is a prestigious reprint (dated 1911) of Dante’s “little book”, illustrated with paintings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, first published in Italy in 1902 by Roux and Viarengo. Joyce bought his copy in Trieste, second-hand, sometime between 1912 and 1915. This paper investigates the influence of the so-called “Pre-Raphaelite” edition of Dante’s libello on Joyce’s imaginary through an analysis of the complex figure of Gerty, the Nausicaa whom Bloom meets on Sandymount beach.
