Ell, «per sempre, em besà la boca, tremolant»: Paolo i Francesca en la pintura prerrafaelita i estetizant
Resum
Aquest article se centra en les representacions de Paolo i Francesca en la pintura dels moviments prerrafaelites i “estètics”. En el context de la reavaluació literària i erudita de Dant al segle XIX, nombrosos pintors van abordar el tema dels amants abraçats. John Flaxman va crear un model iconogràfic que va circular al llarg del segle: els amants es posen en escena en una composició teatral, es besen castament, observat per Gianciotto. No hi ha passió que Francesca expressi en el cant V. Aquesta configuració ha estat emulada per nombrosos pintors, entre ells francesos, com M.-P. Coupin de la Couperie i J.A.D. Ingres, i d'artistes anglesos, com William Dyce. El petó dels amants esdevé central, però la reserva femenina es subratlla. El pintor prerrafaelita Dante Gabriel Rossetti fa un gran avenç amb el seu tractament molt sensual de la parella abraçada. Diversos pintors d'estètica van agafar el tema però el van sentimentalitzar, cancel·lant així la dimensió apassionada original de la història.
