Marie Spartali Stillman: le donne diventano protagoniste dell’iconografia dantesca
Abstract
Il saggio propone un’analisi delle opere pittoriche di Marie Spartali Stillman ispirate a Dante. I quadri dell’artista inglese di origini greche, realizzati nel periodo compreso tra il 1880 e il 1914, oltre a testimoniare l’influenza dell’idea preraffaelita di Dante, entrano nel canone di un’iconografia che fino a quel momento – fatta eccezione per le illustrazioni della Commedia di Sophie Giacomelli – è prevalentemente al maschile. Formatasi nell’ambiente dei Preraffaeliti, come dimostrano i quadri a soggetto dantesco, per la Spartali la pratica artistica è anche un modo per trovare uno stile proprio, emanciparsi dai “padri” e trovare uno spazio come artista e come donna nell’Inghilterra vittoriana.
