Between Emotions and Politics: the Crossed History of Romantic Virility
Abstract
This article is in a historiographical crossroads where the history of emotions combines with other approaches in order to investigate the deep cultural keys of the political action. The paper does not consider the history of emotions as a specific field of study, but rather as an analytical sensitivity that can be used across and enhanced with inputs from other approaches. From this standpoint, it presents the Romanticism as an "emotional regime", taking -and discussing at the same time- the concept coined by William Reddy. In this context, masculinity is considered a crucial issue in shaping the post-revolutionary liberal order, both in a political and a sentimental way, and so, some creative spaces of bourgeois virility are analyzed. In the last part of the article, the set of regulations that shaped the regime is confronted with the fractures that appeared in parallel to the introduction of the liberal regime. In order to do so, some questions and their possible answers about the cultural factors that allowed the widespread and achievement of this emotional regime have been drawn from the biographical history. Finally, a interpretation of the Romanticism as an emotional style is pointed out.
