Abstract

This article analyzes some of the inner contradictions in Leopardi’s Discorso di un italiano intorno alla poesia romantica as a way to explain the split of the first Leopardian lyrical subject into the paradoxical duality of a fanciullo / vecchio self. This question is viewed from the perspective of the rearrangement which canzoni and idilli went through when the Canti were constituted for the first time. Key words: 19th Century, literary criti
