The Popular Sectors and the Problem of National Fragmentation. “Chinese”, “Black”, and “Indigenous” in the Peruvian Intellectual Discussion of the Turn ff the Century (1879-1930)
Abstract
This essay aims to deepen on the debates in which the Peruvian intellectuals participated in the period from the beginning of the War of the Pacific until the end of the Government of Leguía (1879-1930), where the peasantry (indigenous, "black" and "Chinese") joined to the emergency of the medium and popular urban sectors (thanks to an incipient working class) put in check the power of the Lima oligarchy. Through the analysis of these fifty years of intense activity for the "thinkers of the nation", we propose to expose those insights of the discussions that originated around the inclusion in the national project of those excluded and segregated ethnic minorities, within a community deeply fragmented.
