The truth of things past. Notes on the notion of phantasmagoria
Abstract
This paper aims to describe the ‘dialectical’ character of the notion of phantasmagoria, which Walter Benjamin used as touchstone for criticising the ideology represented in Passagen-Werk. To this end, we show the continuity between Benjamin’s critique and some elements of his former work. Aided by the previously developed theory of historical knowledge, Benjamin conceived a non-substantive notion of truth opposed to both ‘false consciousness’ and its counterpart, the claim of an ‘awareness’ able to grasp the transparent meaning of reality without distortion. Keywords
