Abstract

This paper aims to describe the ‘dialectical’ character of the notion of phantasmagoria, which Walter Benjamin used as touchstone for criticising the ideology represented in Passagen-Werk. To this end, we show the continuity between Benjamin’s critique and some elements of his former work. Aided by the previously developed theory of historical knowledge, Benjamin conceived a non-substantive notion of truth opposed to both ‘false consciousness’ and its counterpart, the claim of an ‘awareness’ able to grasp the transparent meaning of reality without distortion.
