Gas laws and scuba diving: Didactic proposal for the study of Boyle-Mariotte’s law based on research and applied to scuba diving
Abstract
Ideal gases’ laws are essential content within the subjects of Physics and Chemistry in Compulsory Secondary Education. Particularly, since its experimental nature makes them a good starting point to develop a research activity in the framework of the kinetic molecular model. In addition, research and application activities have been extensively studied in the field of science education, to improve the students’ learning of Physics and Chemistry. However, its development can be complicated; for this reason, this article intends to exemplify this methodology with a teaching sequence formed by 2 blocks: 1) A research activity about the relationship between pressure and volume in gases structured in six stages, the last one being the creation of a scientific poster; and 2) An activity to apply the conclusions obtained from phenomenon that take place outside the school such as scuba diving. To do so, a brief summary of science education contributions to research will be explained, actions to be developed at each stage will be detailed and resources for its applications will be provided. Keywords
