A Cognitive Look At The Monster In Fantastic Literature And The Narrative Of The Unusual: Empathy And The Monstrification Of The Reader
Abstract
Cognitive studies applied to literature take into consideration bodily experiences during reading. By resorting to the paradigm of embodied simulation and the theory of empathic reading, this paper develops the hypothesis of an emergent hybrid body constituted by the virtual convergence of the reader’s body and the fictitious character’s body. This embodied experience of characters having monstrous bodies, such as some protagonists in the narratives of the unusual, entails a fantastic inhabitation of the reader’s own body.
