Rosa María de la Torre Torres. Los fundamentos de los derechos de los animales. Tirant lo Blanch (Ciudad de México 2021) 192p.
Abstract
The book of Rosa María de la Torre Torres exposes and presents in clear, elegant and concise manner the philosophical and juridical origins, foundations and problems relating to the question of rights for nonhuman animals. De la Torre’s proposal falls within the framework of law and the book is a defense of the need to anchor in law the reconfiguration of the relation between humans and nonhuman, which is one of the most dramatic demands of our times. And yet the author is aware that opening the law to nonhuman subjects entails a radical transformation of law itself and cannot be simply limited to the mere extension of human juridical categories to (some categories of) nonhumans. That is why it is so important to establish clear and solid foundations, failing which any proposal will be vain. This awareness, together with that of the enormity of the task required by such a transformation (which is nothing less than a radical transformation of our way of life), lends to the book a philosophical complexity and depth usually missing in many discussions of “animal rights.”
