Ciencia y espiritualidad: incongruencias otomanas, paradojas europeas
Resumen
Las percepciones otomanas y turcas de Europa han sido comúnmente analizadas con énfasis en las contradicciones que encarnan y utilizando el marco de una "relación de amor y odio". En este artículo, analizo los escritos del intelectual otomano tardío Ahmed Midhat Efendi, que no solo produjo muchos trabajos sobre Europa que ejemplifican estas incoherencias, sino que también reconoció y analizó sus actitudes autocontradictorias hacia Europa. Argumento que las representaciones inconsistentes que Midhat tenía de Europa no se debieron simplemente a las turbulentas relaciones políticas y culturales entre el Imperio Otomano y las Grandes Potencias: las observaciones de Midhat también se referían a las contradicciones del capitalismo industrial y del colonialismo mismo. Finalmente, muestro que Midhat vio en la ciencia y en las identidades profesionales de los científicos modernos la solución al problema de las inconsistencias de Europa.
