Monographic Issue: "The women narrators and the fantastic in Spanish America and Spain (21st century)" (coord. Carmen Alemany and Cecilia Eudave)

Deadline: december 15, 2019

There is no doubt that there is an increasing number of women writers who face the cultivation of the fantastic in the literatures of Spanish America and Spain in the 21st century. This also implies the opening of new paths in the genre, the development of themes and forms that are absent or little explored in the works of male authors. But at the same time, it should also be noted that the presence of the women creators in the canons and academic studies on the fantastic is at least unsatisfactory (except for honorable exceptions), which negatively affects the knowledge of both the strict panorama of the fantastic and the cultural production carried out by women.

The main objective of this monograph is, then, to highlight and make visible the work of the fantastic women narrators who publish their works in Spanish in the 21st century, while proposing studies on the forms, themes, styles, in short, about the feminine fantastic poetics and their relations with the fantastic in general.

Main themes:

  • Theoretical perspectives on the fantastic and the unusual (applied to the study of the narrative written by women)
  • The fantastic feminist: ideology, criticism and transgression
  • Fantastic and feminine identity
  • Female monsters
  • Fantastic spaces
  • Fantastic bodies

Brumal will only consider works of a fantastic nature as defined by the journal, hereby only accepting papers on other non-mimetic genres such as the marvellous or science fiction if and when they are related to fantastic narrative.
