Timfea(nos): Molosios o Macedonios
Resumen
A finales del siglo VI a.C., los tifaios, al igual que los orostas, eran considerados tribus molosas. No se debe cometer el error común de interpretar la expansión macedonia en estas zonas con la ayuda de fuentes literarias muy posteriores que describen las condiciones de estas zonas bajo el dominio romano, especialmente las de la provincia romana de Macedonia, ignorando así las fuentes anteriores; por lo tanto, no se debe incluir a Tymphaia en las regiones macedonias «originales». Timfea fue incorporada al reino macedonio después de 351 ó 342 por Filipo II, convirtiéndose a partir de entonces en parte integrante de Macedonia y teatro de decisiones cruciales relativas al trono macedonio. Las instituciones preexistentes de los tifosi no fueron abolidas tras esta incorporación. Su caracterización como «macedonios» por Arriano está relacionada con el uso político del adjetivo «nacional» «macedonios», es decir, súbditos del rey macedonio. La organización tribal de la región también debió de desempeñar un papel importante en la percepción de los tifosi por parte de los griegos del sur. En este contexto, sólo cabe admitir la incapacidad de proceder a ulteriores sugerencias o suposiciones, ya que los testimonios escritos supervivientes son escasos. Quizá sean vitales en este sentido los datos que aporten a los historiadores las excavaciones arqueológicas realizadas en la zona y la posible identificación de los asentamientos mencionados en las escasas fuentes literarias.
