El papel de Tesalia en la política exterior de los Argéadas y un caso de tradición inventada
Resumen
En la Antigüedad, los tesalios y los macedonios, vecinos en la periferia del mundo griego, eran percibidos como primitivos patanes incultos, cuya inestabilidad política y proclividad al lujo los dejaban expuestos a la colaboración con los persas, el arquetípico enemigo extranjero de los griegos. Con el paso del tiempo, estos estereotipos se convirtieron gradualmente en caricaturas hostiles que guardaban poca relación con la realidad, un proceso que se acentuó cuando Filipo II de Macedonia empezó a sustituir a los persas como amenaza directa a la autonomía continuada de las poleis griegas. En esta contribución, vuelvo a examinar el papel que la tradicional alianza de los Argeada con los Alévadas de Tesalia desempeñó en la conquista definitiva de Grecia por Filipo, contribuyendo así al desarrollo de los estereotipos poco halagüeños que ambos compartían. La estrecha relación entre Filipo y los aleúadas también es responsable de la retroacción a su predecesor argeado, Arquelao, de una intervención en Tesalia llevada a cabo en realidad por el hermano de Filipo, Alejandro II.
