Damastion y algunas minas dardanas, la Liga Calcídica y Filipo II
Resumen
Siguiendo a Estrabón, las minas de Damastión y de su región se han localizado tradicionalmente en Iliria occidental. Pero, por varias razones, la única antigua mina de plata conocida, al oeste del Axios, en las colinas de Openika, arriba de la actual Ohrid, no es una opción. Sin embargo, los hallazgos de monedas del tipo Damastion, acuñadas según el modelo calcídico, apuntan a la amplia cuenca de Skupi/Skopje como zona de circulación y centro de comercio de plata. Dos antiguos distritos mineros pueden localizarse no muy lejos, al este y al norte, en las regiones de Kratovo (en la moderna Macedonia del Norte) y (algo más tarde) Ulpianum (en Kosovo o el sur de Serbia). Desde ambos distritos, en la primera mitad delsiglo IV, la plata mineral viajaba hacia el sur a través del valle de Axios y la región de Anthemous hasta la ceca federal calcídica de Olynthos. Las minas del distrito de Kratovo lindaban con la helenizada Paionia, mientras que las del norte, pertenecientes a Dardania, estaban mucho menos en contacto con la civilización griega. La ubicación de Damastión, probablemente en las tierras fronterizas de Paionia, explica el carácter griego de sus monedas. Se convirtieron en modelos para las de las minas de Dardania que, sin embargo, pronto se alejaron de los estándares griegos. No obstante, Damastión mantuvo estrechas relaciones con los calcídicos: poco después de la Guerra del Peloponeso fue fundada por los mendaos y otros grupos, entre ellos refugiados de Aigina. Las conexiones económicas de Calcídica con el norte de Dardania, basadas en el comercio de plata, impulsaron una alianza defensiva que el rey ilirio-dardanio Grabos concluyó hacia 357 con los calcídicos contra Filipo. Extremadamente efímera, fue anulada por los olndios cuando aceptaron la oferta de Filipo de una simmachia. Arrojaron la estela inscrita con su alianza dárdica a un río que pasaba por su ciudad antes incluso de que estuviera completamente incisa.
