The Sarapeion of Thessaloniki

An Architectural and Cultic Overview

Authors

Abstract

The subject of this paper is the architectural development of the Sarapeion of Thessaloniki, as well as the cult practices that took place within the sanctuary. The fact that the architectural remains of the sanctuary were reburied, as well as the incomplete publication of the various finds, makes the total comprehension and understanding of the cult quite difficult. However, the numerous inscriptions found in the sanctuary, somehow fill this gap. Moreover, the comparison with other sanctuaries of Egyptian gods, both in Macedonia, as well as in other locations of the Greek world can contribute, in part, to the understanding of the function and the restoration of the cult practices of the sanctuary of Thessaloniki.
