New arguments for dating the periplographer Timagetus: his parallels with Ps.-Scylax
Abstract
The recent study by S. Brillante on the debated Ps.-Scylax’s Periplous has resolved almost all the philological issues that such a work entails, since it provides the contemporary reader with strong arguments in favour of its composition by an anonymous Athenian at the beginning of the last third of the 4th century BC, as a literary product characteristic of that time (during the reign of Philip II). We believe that a systematic comparison with the fragments of the geographical treatise Ports or On Ports by the periplographer Timagetus, for which we have very little reliable data, clearly contributes to the dating of both works.
