Abstract

In this text, written in two voices, the authors remember their period of development under the guidance of Professor John. J. Gumperz and the beginnings of Discourse Analysis in Catalonia. The article makes special mention of the “Conversations with John. J. Gumperz” which took place in Barcelona in 1997, at the UPF campus in La Rambla. The recordings and transcriptions of the Conversations have been made public at: https://gumperz.wordpress.com/.

Author Biographies

Helena Calsamiglia, Universitat Pompeu Fabra

Helena Calsamiglia Blancafort es doctora en Filología Española por la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona y profesora de Análisis del Discurso del Departamento de Traducción y Ciencias del Lenguaje de la Universidad Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona). Ha ejercido su docencia de postgrado en el Máster de Lingüística Teórica y Aplicada y en el Máster de Comunicación Científica de su universidad. En el ámbito de la investigación se ha especializado en el discurso de la divulgación de las ciencias. Sus campos de estudio preferentes son la pragmática y la enunciación, el análisis conversacional y el análisis textual. Ha publicado diferentes artículos y libros entre los que cabe destacar Las cosas del decir: Manual de Análisis del discurso (con Amparo Tusón). Ha sido promotora del Grupo de Estudios del Discurso (GED) y ha coordinado una red internacional de grupos de investigación  durante más de una década.
