‘A Lighthouse on the Beach’ Stories, Metaphors, and Anecdotes in Teachers’ Personal Recounts

L’interès que últimament suscita la identitat del professorat en general i en particular la identitat del professorat de llengua mostra que, tot i que la recerca sobre la identitat del professorat pot ser polèmica, fer-ne l’anàlisi pot ajudar a aclarir el procés de desenvolupament del professorat. De fet, com a marc d’anàlisi clau s’ha incentivat el paper de la identitat en el desenvolupament del professorat. En aquest estudi, que explora els relats derivats d’entrevistes, examino com una professora principiant desenvolupa més confiança en el(s) seu(s) paper(s) com a professora mitjançant l’explicació d’històries basades en la identitat imaginada com a professora però també en l’experiència dins de l’aula. Alhora que la professora comparteix aquestes històries, reflexiona per intuïció sobre la seva identitat professional mitjançant l’ús de metàfores i anècdotes.
Aquestes facetes poc investigades del qüestionament narratiu es presenten a l’article com a representants discursius simbòlics que el professor fa servir per crear-se un espai d’autodefinició dins de la comunitat de pràctica del professorat.

Selim Ben Said, National Institute of Education

Selim Ben Said is Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Education, Singapore. His research interests include multilingualism, language attitudes, language policy & planning, linguistic landscape, narrative research, teacher identity, and language & protest movements. His recently co-edited book ‘Language Teachers and Teaching: Global Perspectives, Local Initiatives’ (Routledge) examines language teacher education in a variety of international contexts. He is also working on two edited collection (a) ‘Advances and Current Trends in Language Teacher Identity Research’ (Routledge) and (b) ‘Conflict, Exclusion, and Dissent in the Linguistic Landscape’ (Palgrave). His most recent grant project examines English teachers’ professional development from graduation through their first two years of teaching. In this longitudinal project he explores teachers’ socialization, and identity development through narratives.
