Editors' notes: Addressing linguistic inequality in Latin America. Sociolinguistic and ethnographic approaches to study the uses of indigenous languages in education
Abstract
In recent years, progress has been made in the study of the complex relations between indigenous languages and Spanish in Latin American education. This special issue brings together researchers who make contributions along these lines. Their productions invite to take a closer look at the relationships between languages and speakers from the point of view of the protagonists who teach indigenous languages, interact in and outside the classroom, and produce materials for these processes. These are investigations that coincide in the regional context where they develope, their research methodology, as well as in the disciplinary field in which they are inserted and for which they make novel contributions. This issue includes four articles, a review and an interview; it brings together both established researchers who review their careers and invite us to think about the future of sociolinguistics in the region, as well as the contributions of young researchers whose innovative proposals allow us to reflect on the relations between indigenous languages and the educational sphere.
