Sociolinguistics and ethnography in Latin America: an interview with Virginia Zavala, specialist in indigenous languages and education
Abstract
Virginia Zavala is a senior lecturer and researcher at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. She researches issues of language and education from an ethnographic and discursive approach, with a particular focus on Quechua. She has studied intercultural bilingual education programs, academic literacies, linguistic ideologies, and the relationship between language and racialization. Among her latest publications are Qichwasimirayku. Batallas por el quechua (with Luis Mujica, Gavina Córdova and Wilfredo Ardito; PUCP, 2014), Racismo y lenguaje (with Michele Back; Fondo Editorial de la PUCP, 2017) and Hacia una sociolingüística crítica: desarrollos y debates (with Mercedes Niño- Murcia and Susana de los Heros; IEP, 2020).
