Abstract

The purpose of this article is to highlight the geo-economic scope of antitrust as a tool for ensuring social peace and, ultimately, human security. The geo-economic foundations of the European Union are a proof of the relationship between antitrust and human security. The political scope of antitrust in the United States is analysed, as well as the rediscovery of Louis Brandeis and the current critique of the consumer welfare paradigm by the Neo-Brandeisian movement. It studies how the Brandeisian approach impacted on the position of the United States in relation to German cartels during World War II and the postwar period. In particular, it explains how antitrust was implemented in Europe after World War II as part of the reconstruction of the continent, and how it has ensured the longest period of peace and prosperity in the history of Europe.
