Abstract

Through an innovative methodology that combines the academic essay and poetic creative writing, this paper aims to present an overview of the historical evolution of the adivasi, mainly focussing on the origin of the major problems from colonial times until contemporary days. The focus of study is the adivasi woman of the south-east regions of Orissa, also the santhal woman of West Bengal. Eventually, the major objective is to contribute to the deconstruction of a series of prejudices that still loom over in our popular memory, which are fruit of the impact of colonial legacy and the unstoppable violence of globalization.

Author Biography

Ana Garcia-Arroyo, Universitat Rovira i Virgili Departament of English Studies Tarragona (Spain)

Ana García-Arroyo is a Spanish writer and associate professor, teaching literature at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona). She has a PhD in English Studies (U.A.B) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Postcolonial Literatures and Cultures (U.B). Her usual areas of work are Indian English Literature with its intersection in Women’s Studies, Gender-Sexuality and Adivasi populations. For over 20 years she has been living in different parts of India, doing research and travelling around. Her work has produced 8 books: one translation, Fábulas feministas, four essays, such as Alternative Sexualities in India (2010) and Historia de las mujeres de la India (2009); two novels, for example, Madre India (2012); and a collection of short stories, Cuentos para educar el género (2014). She also has a great volume of articles published national and internationally. She has been invited by different universities inIndia,Ecuador,England andAustralia.
