Crime in India: Historical, Cultural and Literary representations

For a few decades, authors of crime fiction have used the genre to interrogate society, reveal the dark underbelly of contemporary politics, and expose the trappings of neoliberal/neo-imperial ideologies that pervade our modern world. It is precisely the capacity of crime fiction to probe into the failures of the system that draws writers with a social conscience to the genre, a potential that crime authors from former colonies have tapped into to articulate critiques of their imperial histories and the ongoing legacies of empire.

This issue aims to explore crime beyond this genre, in order to delve into the social, historical, political, cultural, ethnic and religious ramifications of crime in contemporary India. We seek contributions that explore the evolution of crime in the subcontinent and how the physiognomy of the territory is determined by the challenges posed by criminal undertakings, as well as those that stem from past customs and traditions or disjunctions between post-colonial dreams and present-day realities.

Proposed topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Crime in India versus criminal India
  • Gender and crime: dowry deaths, acid attacks, gang rapes, etc.
  • Colonialism, postcoloniality and crime
  • Ethnic and racial crime
  • International crime fiction set in India
  • Transnational encounters and cultural differences
  • ‘Slum’ tourism and urbex in India
  • Strategic exoticism and commodification of India: India from the diaspora
  • Religious, caste and class tensions
  • State corruption and politics in India
  • Cybercrime

Deadline for submissions: April  30th 2027
