La forma lògica de les oracions d'acció i la tesi d'Anscombe
Resum
Aquest article consta de tres seccions. En la primera, exposo i analitzo l'explicació semàntica de Davidson sobre les oracions adverbials: la idea bàsica és que aquestes oracions impliquen una quantificació sobre els esdeveniments, i defenso aquest punt de vista enfront de perspectives oposades, com la teoria dels adverbis com a modificadors de predicats. En la segona secció defenso l'afirmació que en les construccions angleses que segueixen l'esquema: «X va fer V per T-ings», ens referim a la mateixa acció de X; el que a vegades es denomina «la tesi de Anscombe». Una vegada més, analitzo les teories contraposades per a concloure que la tesi de Anscombe és certa. En la tercera secció, no obstant això, es mostra que assumir com a premisses aquestes dues tesis —l'explicació de Davidson i la tesi de Anscombe— condueix a un greu conflicte. S'elaboren i rebutgen solucions alternatives. També s'argumenta que l'única solució defensable depèn d'uns certs supòsits metafísics. Finalment, no obstant això, posaré en dubte aquesta solució.
