Abstract

The author briefly describes the main purpose of this certificate course, one of the options in vocational training offered by the public education system in Spain. It then gives details about the pedagogical approaches currently being applied in this course as well as the role of language in class and the benefits of using a foreign language instead of the students’ L1. She also gives examples of projects, quality learning tasks and techniques that might be useful to other teachers of vocational courses.

Author Biography

Tònia Cladera Bohigas, APAC (Associació de Professors d'Anglès de Catalunya)

Tònia Cladera is a Vocational Education Teacher specialized in healthcare and teacher educator related to the use of the CLIL approach. She holds a degree in Pharmacy and is currently finishing a master’s degree in CLIL at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

Her first professional milestone was achieved as a regulatory affairs technician in a biochemical laboratory, by obtaining the CE mark for the products manufactured in this company. Since 2005 she has worked as a Science or VET teacher in several schools; one of them, in the United States, through the program “Profesores Visitantes en USA y Canadá”.

Currently, she has a permanent position is at Institut la Guineueta (Barcelona). She is also developing and implementing CLIL courses for VET teachers and in the program “GEneració Plurilingüe”, in collaboration with the Departament d’Educació de Catalunya.
