Is “Back to my Point” a Pragmatic Marker? An Inquiry into the Historical Development of some Metatextual Discourse Management Markers in English 2020-12-21T12:52:46+01:00 Elizabeth Closs Traugott Discourse management markers (DMMs) that “signal a meta-comment on the structure of the discourse” (Fraser 2009) are widely attested in historical data. Most discourse management markers (e.g. <em>and</em>, <em>anyway</em>, <em>by the way</em>, <em>but</em>, <em>now</em>, <em>then</em>) meet well-known criteria for pragmatic markers such as multifunctionality, opacity, optionality, (inter)subjectivity, relatively high frequency, and shortness. However, several cited in Fraser (2009), many of them topic-orientation markers, do not (e.g. <em>back to my original point</em>, <em>to return to my previous topic</em>, <em>if I might continue</em>). I propose that an account of the development of DMMs make a distinction between adverbial adjuncts, conjunct adverbials, and pragmatic markers (e.g. Hasselgård 2010). By hypothesis, change may occur along the cline: adverbial adjuncts &gt; conjunct adverbials (&gt; DMMs). This approach accounts for gradual form-meaning shifts and is consistent with a usage perspective on language as a dynamic system grounded in usage events (Kemmer &amp; Barlow 1999; Langacker 2008). 2020-12-21T00:00:00+01:00 Copyright (c) 2020 Elizabeth Closs Traugott Formal Variation and Language Change in Catalan Quantifiers: The Role of Pragmatics 2020-12-21T12:52:46+01:00 Joan-Rafael Ramos This article studies the formal variation of the masculine singular forms of the quantifiers <em>u/un</em> ‘one’, <em>algú/algun</em> ‘someone, some’, <em>ningú/ningun</em> ‘no-one, anyone, not one, any, none’ and <em>cada u/cada un</em> ‘everyone, each one’ in contemporary Catalan. The standard uses of these forms are contrasted with dialectal uses, obtained from a thorough search in oral and written corpora. In addition, they are compared with the uses in the other Romance languages and with their historical evolution in Catalan. The whole set of data, and especially the dialectal information on the Valencian area, allow us to explain the various factors that have interacted in the variation and formal change of these quantifiers. Among these factors, the fundamental role of pragmatics stands out above the rest. It is shown that, given the polysemy and synonymy caused by vacillations between the variants of the quantifiers, strategies are sought to improve communicative effectiveness, so that the differentiation between form and function becomes firmly established in the majority of quantifiers. Other prominent factors are those of analogical and, above all, phonological nature, which, on the one hand, explain the syncretism of the form un, and, on the other, enable us to understand the reasons why in the Valencian area there is a process of substitution of genuine forms by borrowings from Spanish. 2020-12-21T00:00:00+01:00 Copyright (c) 2020 Joan-Rafael Ramos Anaphora and Subjectification in Lexicalized Feminine Clitic Constructions 2020-12-21T12:52:46+01:00 José Luis Cifuentes Honrubia In this paper I will examine anaphoric relationships in lexicalized feminine clitic constructions (<em>dormirla</em> <em>[to sleep it off]</em>, <em>pirárselas [to beat it]</em>, etc.). Lexicalized feminine clitic constructions have no syntactic reference for the clitic, but there is an implicit contextual semantic reference to an implicated and recognized concept. Given the diversity of lexicalized feminine clitic constructions, an attempt is going to be made to establish a growing speaker subjectification continuum depending on whether it is a contextual semantic reference from an accommodation in a singular context, in a multiple context, or we are faced with a conventional implication. We will also comment on other more complicated processes, either because the construction experiences changes in its meaning or because the analogy causes the presence of the feminine clitic. 2020-12-21T00:00:00+01:00 Copyright (c) 2020 José Luis Cifuentes Honrubia Intersubjective Impersonals in Context: A Multivariate Analysis of Spanish “Uno” and “Se” in Spoken Language 2020-12-21T12:52:47+01:00 Barbara De Cock This paper offers a multivariate analysis of the alternation between 2 Spanish constructions traditionally considered as impersonal, namely <em>uno</em> and <em>se</em>, in 3 different spoken language genres. The proposed analysis will show that, while the traditionally described syntactic factors related to this alternation and to the analysis of each of these forms account for part of the alternation, it is the much less studied pragmatic-discursive factors that offer a better explanation. Moreover, we will show the crucial role of genre variation and of differences as to intersubjective functioning for accounting for the alternation between these two constructions. 2020-12-21T00:00:00+01:00 Copyright (c) 2020 Barbara De Cock The Place of Semantics and Pragmatics in a Linguistic Approach to Texts 2020-12-21T12:52:47+01:00 Antónia Coutinho This paper follows the approach assumed by a text linguistics inherited from Coseriu (2007) and framed, from the theoretical and epistemological points of view, within the scope of the Socio- Discursive Interactionism (Bronckart 1997). Considering this, texts are understood as constrained (at the supra level) by the social activities in which they are produced; on the other hand, they are shaped by the linguistic resources they put in place. The main goal here is to discuss the applicability of linguistic descriptions based on a strict differentiation of some fields of study – in particular, semantics and pragmatics. By using an example of analysis that stands for a descending methodological approach we highlight the need of entailing a collaborative manipulation of different contributions established from the description of the linguistic system – bearing in mind that this manipulation accounts for the activity of language as a creative activity, which is itself of a complex nature. 2020-12-21T00:00:00+01:00 Copyright (c) 2020 Antónia Coutinho Subjectivization and Intersubjectivization in the Evolution of the Verb “Témer” in Catalan (13th-19th c.) 2020-12-21T12:52:47+01:00 Jordi M. Antolí Martínez In current-day Catalan, the verb <em>témer</em> (‘to fear’) has an intersubjective value, together with a lexical and epistemic/evidential value. It is used as a strategy of negative politeness in contexts where an apology is made or information that the speaker anticipates will displease or contradict the hearer/reader. However, this value is not exclusive to Catalan and has been observed and studied in diachrony in other languages, especially English. Based on previous studies, this paper aims to describe and explain the process of change whereby the verb <em>témer</em> (‘to fear’) and other synonymous idioms (<em>haver/tenir por/paor/temor</em>) will develop an intersubjective value in Catalan, in a process that will end during the nineteenth century. This research is based on the analysis of data from computerized textual corpora of old, modern and contemporary Catalan. The data obtained have been analyzed qualitatively – in contrast to the evolution described for English (especially in Mazzon’s 2012 study) – using the concept of (inter)subjectivation by E. C. Antolí Martínez Origin and Evolution of a Pragmatic Marker in Catalan: The Case of “Tanmateix” 2020-12-21T12:52:47+01:00 Caterina Martínez Martínez This study offers an analysis of the origin and linguistic evolution of a question-tag in Catalan. We look at the evolution of <em>tanmateix</em> according to Cognitive Linguistics and, more in particular, Grammaticalization Theory and Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics. We also review the values and meaning of <em>tanmateix</em> according to Intersubjectivization Theory. The evolution of <em>tanmateix</em> is a case in point: from its original meaning as a noun phrase [calculus] (13th c.) to its value [confirmation] as a pragmatic marker. To study this, we pay attention to theatrical plays, some of the best examples that include colloquial Catalan in the Modern Period (16th-18th c.): in these texts, <em>tanmateix</em> appears as a marker of a confirmation question and answer. Finally, we link our findings to Martínez’s study (2018, in press) on the creation and dissemination of an academic linguistic norm and its standardization as an element of linguistic change, and we analyze the validity of this conversational use of <em>tanmateix</em> in some Catalan-speaking regions vs. its main [adversative-concessive] value in standard Catalan. 2020-12-21T00:00:00+01:00 Copyright (c) 2020 Caterina Martínez Martínez Evidentiality and Socioepistemic Status of Participants. A Case Study of Spanish por lo visto ‘seemingly’ and al parecer ‘apparently’ 2020-12-21T12:52:47+01:00 Bert Cornillie Pedro Gras This paper presents an interactional approach to the evidential discourse markers <em>por lo visto</em> ‘seemingly’ and <em>al parecer</em> ‘apparently’. It is shown that these markers show a clear preference for interactional actions which involve exchange of information (tell, ask and reply). Moreover, it is argued that the distribution and the function of the two markers are related to the socioepistemic status of the speaker and the organization of the sequence. Primary knowers usually use evidential markers in second parts of the adjacency pair, with a distancing effect, whereas non-primary knowers use evidential markers in first parts. This way speakers seek a confirmation in the next turn, which has a mitigation effect.
