Tradition and Transnationality in the Treatment of the Fantastic in the “Rec” Saga of Jaune Balagueró and Paco Plaza

Rubén Sánchez

Abstract

Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s Rec franchise displays a dual identity or nature: one local or traditional (linking the zombification phenomenon to a deeply Catholic imaginary) and another transnational (related to the trends of modern American horror, as in the latest zombie cinema produced in the 21st century). The article intends to investigate how these two aspects determine the visualization and thematization of the fantastic and the supernatural in the films of the series.
