Insights towards Native and Non-Native ELT Educators

Abstract

A detailed analysis is provided here of the concept, perceptions and attitudes towards native and non-native English speaking teachers. The notion that the ideal language educator is a native speaker is explained and questioned, and examples of the unfair treatment non-native speakers of English sometimes receive are given. The strengths in both NESTs and NNESTs are highlighted.

Resumen

Se analiza el concepto, las percepciones y actitudes de los docentes hablantes nativos y no nativos del inglés. Se explica y cuestiona la creencia de que el docente de lengua ideal es el hablante nativo y se dan ejemplos del trato injusto que algunas veces reciben los hablantes no nativos del inglés. Se subrayan las fortalezas tanto en los NESTs como en los NNESTs (por sus siglas en inglés).
